Self Mailers
Self mailers are formats that do not require an envelope and are
usually constructed from a single stream of paper. Consider a self
mailer when the message is simple, copy length is concise, when
a tear off reply device will do and when you want to display the
graphics and headline copy before the consumer even opens your mail.
Advantages
- Least expensive of all formats
- BRC reply devices cost less than business reply envelopes
- Quick, early impression on the consumer even if they do not
open the mailer
- Faster production schedule
Disadvantages
- Less copy space
- One paper stock
- Less customer involvement for consumers who do open the mailing
- Less data security if the mailing requires personal numbers
or data
- Typically, lower response rates than other formats.
Window Envelope – inserted
Window envelopes are the most common of all direct mail formats
since they rank high on many criteria, including cost control, security,
responsiveness, copy area and versatility. With the invention of
the window envelope, mailers could personalize their mail while
retaining the important benefits of information security without
the added cost and accuracy risk of two-part matched components.
Advantages
- Low cost potential
- Security of a sealed envelope
- Can vary in appearance from “low budget” to “official
business”
- Can carry a BRE with a personalized reply device
Disadvantages
- Not distinctive in the mailbox
- Usually only one personalized part
Dimensional Pieces
Custom boxes/mailers as well as "magic window" mailers
are examples of dimensional pieces. Used for sampling, product launch
or to create a virtually 100% package open rate.
Advantages
- 100% package opening rate
- Can enclose samples or other 3-dimensional pieces
- Customer involvement is greatly increased
Disadvantages
- More expensive. Should be used for product launch or when the
lifetime value of new customers justifies the initial cost.
- Slower to produce -- about 50M to 100M per day maximum
Multi-ply Formats
Collated packages are any format constructed of several webs of
paper laid on top of one another, glued at one or more edges and
cut to singles. The plies can be of different paper types, they
can be personalized or generic and can have different fold and cut-off
sizes. In this format, each ply (web) is printed and imaged individually
and only brought together in the final construction process on the
collator.
Advantages
- Wide range of costs and sizes
- Multiple personalized parts
- Different paper stocks in one package
- Closed face format generally handles large amounts of copy and
artwork in an organized, manageable way for the consumer.
Disadvantages
- Generally more expensive than window formats and self mailers
- Slightly longer design and production time span
